Our blue and red defaced Yacht Club Ensigns can be fully sewn, partially sewn or printed. The ensigns are made from either woven polyester or knitted polyester. Both fabrics are MoD specification with appliqued or printed club designs. If the design is complicated, we usually have the image printed. However, if the design is simple enough, applique is a popular choice as it does not cost much more than the printed version.
For appearance and longevity, we strongly recommend the sewn version as many customers require quality for their Yacht Club Ensigns. To ensure that our customers get the very best for their money, we now produce our flags with added reinforcement which comes in the form of stitching an extra wide hem at the fly-end. If customers require further reinforcements, we are happy to discuss this with you as there are further methods we can look at.
All Ensigns come complete with rope and toggle ready for flying. Other fixture and fittings can be accommodated See here for more information

Caring for your Ensign
Woven / Spun Polyester: Typically 155gsm. Often referred to as MOD grade, this is the most durable material for making flags. Its strength to weight ratio is not surpassed by any other fabric.
It is very important to ensure that the flag can fly unobstructed without striking or coming into constant contact with any obstructions such as a wall, a tree or foliage or that the surface of the pole is rough.
It is also important to consider whether the flag will constantly be exposed to harsh or extreme weather conditions such as high winds or heavy rain or heavily polluted urban environments.
Flying an excessively large flag in bad weather will dramatically reduce the life expectancy.
How long a flag will last is an impossible question to answer as it depends upon many factors.
It is not recommended to fly your flag continuously as this will reduce the life expectancy. Typically a flag flown continuously 24/7 may only last approximately 3 months.
However if the flag is only flown from dawn to dusk 12 hours a day this substantially extends the overall life expectancy of the flag to 6 months or more.
If left out indefinitely, a flag will eventually succumb to the elements
Flags can be hand washed or machine washed at 30 degrees using a mild detergent. If unsure, consult your flagmaker.
Once a flag has become too dirty, it will be difficult to clean
- Never fly in inclement weather and strong winds
- Flags should always be thoroughly dry before folding and storage
- Flags should be taken down at night and in inclement weather
Your flag will endure much longer if it is cared for properly.
To get more life out of your flag you can always re-hem the outer fly edge when it eventually becomes worn. Simply cut away the frayed edge and hem with a suitable sewing machine.
